I’d like to think that good starts don’t just happen during the New Year. I think it’s important that we start every day in a good manner so that we can be more productive all year long, rather than just riding on the high of a brand new calendar year. And to be able to do that, I believe we have to start our day with a good breakfast.
I’ve mentioned time and time again how breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. Personally, when I’m greeted with a good meal in the morning, it really helps keep me in a good mood throughout the day.
Today I’m going to talk about things that I enjoy having for breakfast. This little list is a combination of breakfast treats from S&R, as well as recipes I enjoy making using ingredients I got from S&R.
1. Cereal
Our pantry is always stocked with at least one type of cereal. Cereal is easily my go-to snack when I’m craving something sweet and crunchy any time of the day, so I guess it’s understandable.
My favourite is actually Post’s Honey Bunches of Oats in Strawberry, but when that’s unavailable, I tend to gravitate towards Kellogg’s Red Berries Cereal (Php 469.95 for 37 oz.). I’m a sucker for strawberry-flavoured cereals, so anything with berries also makes it into my shopping cart. On the occasion that I feel like grabbing something different, Kellogg’s Raisin Bran (Php 479.95 for 2.17 kg) is a good choice.
2. Milk and yogurt
After cereal, it only seems natural to talk about its partner– milk. I looove strawberry milk, but I drink 2% milk more often. You can go for the Cowhead Slim (Php 253.25 for 1L x 2) or our household regular Alaska Slim Milk. There are also a number of flavoured milks available at S&R, but my favourites are the flavoured soy milks because they are soooo good! Yogurts are also great for eating with cereal, or on their own as an afternoon pick-me-up. I highly recommend plain Greek yogurt with a spoonful of fruit jam. YUM!
When we come to S&R, we buy so many different kinds of milk and yogurts it’s almost like we’re opening a milkshake store or something. 😛
3. Fresh fruits
Fruits with yogurt are about one of the best things in this world, but when I add those two into my bowl of cereal then my mornings are pretty much halfway solved! (All I need is a cup of coffee, but we’ll get to that!) Since I typically get my fruit fix alongside my cereal and dairy, I thought I’d talk about them consecutively. My favourites are pineapple, oranges, as well as mangoes. They go perfectly well with cereals, don’t you think?
Depending on the season, you will usually find these fruits in the fresh fruits and veggies section of S&R. 🙂
4. Coffee
There isn’t much I can say about coffee except I can’t survive a day without my cuppa. I love freshly brewed Barako coffee or some Folgers, but I also drink instant coffees too. There are plenty of good ones these days.
I like trying out coffee from different parts of the globe, which is why I’m happy S&R offers so many choices!
4. Oats
Confession time: I haven’t eaten oats in a while. There was a point in my life where I ate oatmeal daily but I grew tired of that exercise and ended up using oats in baking instead. Get yourself one tin of Raley’s Old-Fashioned Oats (Php 172.95) and use it to make the Baked Oatmeal To-Go I shared previously. Or use it to make cookies like these scrumptious Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookies.
Eating cookies for breakfast occasionally is perfectly legal, right?
5. Cheese and Breads
There doesn’t seem to be a more perfect time to eat cheese than the morning. Okay, afternoon snack is okay too but I tend to prefer cheese in the mornings! You know those open-faced sandwiches with a bit of cream cheese and smoked salmon? So good for a morning treat! Normally though I’m pretty happy with thin slices of cheddar cheese that go melty over warm toast. You can take it a notch higher and make some Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, aka the perfect early-morning indulgence!
The best part about cheese is that you can use them to make a whole lot of breakfast-worthy meals too. I like having stuff like Tillamook Monterey Jack Cheese (Php 799.95) or Tillamook Sharp Cheddar (Php 899.95 for 2 lbs) in my fridge for early morning cooking whims.
That way if I suddenly feel in the mood to make some of those Sweet & Savoury Loaded Puff Pastry Straws, I can do so in a snap! Or what about this hot pan of Mushroom-Spinach Baked Eggs? Ugh so scrumptious!
6. Pancakes and waffles
There are about a thousand and one ways to dress up your pancakes and waffles these days so I keep finding reason after reason to love them. Well, apart from the smell that always gets me every time! Try out these Peanut Butter, Banana, and Choco-Chip Waffles or these Banana Buttermilk Pancakes. A brilliant way to start the day indeed!
If you don’t like to do your pancakes and waffles from scratch, just use the Krusteaz Pancake Mix that S&R always has by the sack, then add the rest of the ingredients to flavour them up.
Don’t worry, I won’t tell! 😉
8. Fruit and berry juices
Although I’m all about the fresh fruit and veggie juicing movement, you have to admit, sometimes it’s just easier to buy bottled or boxed juices. Some of my favourite juices are from the Berry Company. The Del Monte Acai Blueberry Juice (Php 319.90 for 32oz x 2) is a good alternative to that as well. Oh, and stuff like Del Monte Prune Juice (Php 329.90 for 32oz x 2) can really help with morning digestion. If you’re not a fan of eating prunes, then maybe drink them instead? (I prefer to eat them though!)
Aaand that’s about the basic stuff that really help make me a happy camper every morning. Breakfast, you guys, don’t skip it! You got a lot of choices these days! And thanks to S&R you can get all of it in one place. All the more reason to LoveSnR!
