As an avid cookie baker, it was virtually impossible for me to ignore a recipe named Magical, Marvelous, Memorable Cookies from Food52. In this world full of cookie recipes, it’s a bold claim to use so many superlatives to name one single cookie after all. It’s not that I wanted to challenge the idea and prove it wrong. It’s more like I wanted to see for myself if this recipe warranted the name.

Food52 is a food site I enjoy and trust quite a bit. I didn’t think they would carelessly dole out such adjectives; especially not now when people have become more discerning about cookies. The cookie obsession currently sweeping Manila off its feet began in America after all, so I’m pretty sure they know what a good cookie is, probably better than anyone.

Funnily enough, while everyone else is busy being addicted to eating cookies, here I am busy being addicted to making them. Seriously, who needs like twenty chocolate chip cookie recipes in their life? Me, apparently. I even have a page that exclusively features variations of chocolate chip cookies. But you know what? That page is one of my favorite parts of the blog. I like making cookies, and I cannot lie.

My desire to make Green Tea White Chocolate Blondies first started after an afternoon snack at Nomi Matcha Cafe. We had ordered a dessert platter and I was honestly expecting the bars to be my least favorite part of it, but it was the complete opposite. Even I was surprised, but pleasantly so! I’m not normally a fan of blondies or white chocolate because I often find them too sweet for my taste. But somehow Nomi’s bars worked their charm on me. They gave me such a strong impression I felt compelled to make some at home. After a bit of research, I finally came across a recipe that I really really liked.

There were really three major considerations for me when it came to making the perfect Green Tea White Chocolate Blondies. First, they couldn’t be too sweet. That’s always the danger with any dessert, but especially so when involving white chocolate. Second, they had to have an obvious matcha flavor. Last, they had to have a fudgy, chewy texture that would make them a pleasure to munch on. And this recipe hits all three on the head.

It’s interesting how much the chocolate chip cookie has evolved over the years. From small-ish Chips Ahoy types of way back when, to palm-sized but thin cookies in twined packaging, now it’s all about the super fat, super big Levain Chocolate Chip Cookies. Or at least, I think those big chunkers were made popular by Levain Bakery from NYC. It was like I woke up one day and they had become the quintessential chocolate chip cookie.

Not that I’m complaining. More cookies, more fun, right?

Cookies have always been one of the most wonderful parts of the dessert world, in my opinion. As happy as I am about the spotlight currently shining on cookies, I still can’t help but feel a little wary. A lot of these cookies are being sold for really high prices online. I get the use of premium ingredients; the premium chocolates and all that jazz, but maybe it’s the home baker in me. I keep thinking that for the price of a dozen cookies online, you can make 3 or 4 dozen at home. All you need is a good cookie recipe and a bunch of easy-to-find ingredients, and you can make stuff like the Double Chocolate Chip Cookies I’ll be talking about today.
