There’s magic in believing things will turn out for the best

I am currently at a place my obsessively goal-driven self does not like. There’s been a lack of my usual motivations and bouts of inspiration, not even the usual energy I give to all the things that I do. It’s strange. But maybe it’s my own fault too. Since my grandmother’s death my mind has been on overdrive. I’ve been thinking plenty about life, about living, about dying, about my fears, about the future, about what-if’s, about my regrets… It kind of feels like I suddenly had this need to figure out how to live that I seem to have forgotten to actually do so. It certainly feels like I’ve…

Literal sweet hearts for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is here! Sometimes I find it funny that I actually write about it at all here on the blog since I don’t really find it to be as big of a deal as others seem to make it. I’ve spent the last couple of years trying to “preach” about how love should be shown all year round and not just during occasions like Valentine’s after all. I have witnessed firsthand some people who are very quietly expressive of their love most of the time, but…

Chocolate Peppermint Cupcakes to wish you a very Merry Christmas!

I hope by now everyone has done their last-minute shopping and is taking it easy. It’s the 24th on this side of the globe and I feel positively giddy! The time is near for gathering round the Christmas tree after a hearty dinner, then the gifts will be passed around over and above the chatter of excited family members. I always imagine my family opening gifts around the cozy fireplace, except that having one is vastly impractical when you live here in the Philippines. (In reality, we gather around the area where the cold air from the air-conditioning is most felt.) I always love that moment when we’re all together,…

Of long-lasting friendships and not-so-long-lasting cupcakes

This is a story about a boy named Gilbert. He’s our resident culture boy; the multilingual dictionary we consult when we want to learn new foreign words. He absolutely loves India and its culture, and I’m convinced he had been Indian during his past life. But most of all, he’s one of my longest-standing friends. I’ve known him since before I knew my multiplication table! I first met him during preschool, when we were 4 or 5. As luck would have it, we were classmates all throughout kindergarten and grade school as well. When high school came along, we got assigned into our separate classes. If anything though, I think…

{Countdown to Christmas} My favourite Mint Chocolate Cupcakes

Christmas gives me such an excuse to break out my bottle of peppermint extract! I don’t normally make anything with peppermint for the rest of year because it doesn’t quite feel right, but I cherish the opportunity to make all things minty throughout the Christmas season. Preferably combined with chocolate. Of course. I just don’t know how the rest of the family feels about the barrage of peppermint-y things, but they certainly didn’t complain when I made these. I have a friend who, like me, really loves this flavour combination. Back in college she used to bring me chocolates from her stash, and I distinctly remember that every time she…
