If you have an apple and I have an apple, how ’bout some pies?

I have very mixed feelings when it comes to apples. I really don’t like to eat them (well, not unless there’s a bit of peanut butter smudged over them). But apple juice is one of my favourite juices, and apple-flavoured candies and drinks, even candied apples, are always welcome to me. I also happen to love all sorts of pies and tarts with apples in them. There’s just something about the soft tanginess of apples baked with the fragrant sweetness of cinnamon that is so heavenly… So am I or am I not a fan of apples? I feel slightly confused. That said, I find a great deal of peace…

{Dearly Dreaming Dorie} Cobblers and Thumbprint Cookies

So I’ve recently been going through Dorie Greenspan’s Baking: From My Home To Yours. I just finished reading the whole book last night, and it’s no surprise that I’ve bookmarked almost every recipe! I can understand why Dorie’s book is a must have. Every recipe seems well thought out and homey, literally something you would enjoy serving in the comfort of your home to the family you love, or occasionally, to impress the guests. Being relatively new to the cookbook-collecting business, I scour the review sites just to make sure the books I buy are topnotch and worth being part of my beloved collection. And I must say, there’s not a…

Cinnamon Swirl Breads in Two Ways

It seems rather inappropriate to call this a face-off– two recipes, each from giants of cookery and baking- but for the purposes of pleasing my obsessive-compulsive tendency to categorize all my blog entries, I will label it as such. However this is more of a look back at my experiences in making both recipes, as well as my thoughts on the results, rather than anything else. There are no winner or loser recipes here, only bread. And lots of it. That both carry the descriptions “delicious” and “homey” do not even need to be mentioned. They both have their unique set of charms that make them worth a try. But…

Making scones for the first time

Not quite a biscuit but not quite bread, either. What is it? Oh right, a scone. I’m not particularly fond of things with too much butter because I don’t like how they feel in my mouth. But there’s just something about the buttery, savory and sometimes even nutty taste of scones that can make me forget. I was lucky enough to come across a Dorie Greenspan recipe for Apple Cheddar Scones for my first foray to scone-making. However the main mistake I made was shaping them too thin. If you’ll notice, my scones aren’t as thick as a proper scone ought to be. I have no idea why I didn’t follow the…
