I’ve been slacking off, I know. But I have a perfectly good excuse: It’s the weather! Seriously though, with the arrival of the first -ber month we’ve officially entered sweater-weather territory. Aside from finally getting a chance to break out my favourite layered outfits, this weather has made the evenings utterly conducive for lounging around after a long day at work catching up on new shows like Outlander, or surfing the interwebs. Basically anything to do with not blogging, because this kind of weather has a way of activating my lazy bones. And maybe a part of me was stalling too because I haven’t yet decided what to write about…

Bagoong Rice Espesyal with Mura Sarap Bagoong
I really love it when different brands send me samples of their stuff. It’s always nice to be able to see what else is out there beyond what I’m familiar with, and the same applies for food. It’s not just about getting to taste something new and innovative, though that’s always an incident I welcome. It’s also about getting the chance to discover a potential new favourite brand of something oft-used and well-loved, even with things as simple or perhaps even overlooked as bagoong. The Filipino fish paste or bagoong is something I would venture to call a household staple in the Philippines. It’s used to cook many Filipino dishes, and as a condiment for many…

Happy days and Homemade Chicken Inasal
I really have to learn how to balance my travel diaries to encompass more documentations of food. Whenever I go exploring in a new place, I seem to get so excited over the sights that I kind of forget to chronicle the food. It was no different for my Bacolod trip. You can in fact observe from both of my previous entries that I don’t have much in the way of food there. However I would call it a major mortal sin if one went to Bacolod without so much as a taste of its signature dish, the Bacolod Chicken Inasal. We had one inasal meal at the Chicken House…

One of my favourite Filipino breads in 3 forms
There are about a million kinds of breads in the world and I love trying them all. French breads and Japanese breads are among my favourites, but I always- always– find myself drifting back to Filipino bread at the end of the day. There’s something about them that’s so comforting; something that fills me with strong feelings related to home and belongingness more than any other Filipino food so far I think. My soul food, I guess you can call it. Whatever time of the day, nothing beats having a piping hot cup of coffee in one hand and a warm piece of fluffy pan de sal in the other. Unless…

{Christmas Countdown 2013} How to make my favourite Filipino confection, the polvoron [VIDEO]
I think among all the holiday recipes I had planned out for this year, this was the one I was most excited about. POLVORON. One of my favourite Filipino treats ever! Honestly, who wouldn’t love crumbly, milky, buttery shortbread that melts in the mouth? Best part is they can be made into soooo many flavours; like the more classic pinipig, cashew, cookies and cream, and malted chocolate, to the newer blueberry, strawberry, and matcha, or even chocolate-covered… Oh man. This is one of those let-your-imagination-run-wild-with-flavour-options sorts of things. The polvoron is a super crumbly confection-shortbread hybrid originating from Spain. Since the Philippines was formerly a Spanish colony, the country has embraced…

Brightly golden Ensaymada sunshine
If you’re wondering where I’ve been this past week, I’ve been in the hospital. I got sick with the dengue fever and had to be confined for seven unfortunate days in the hospital, four of which were spent fighting off recurring high fevers. It was my first time being hospitalised and I hope I never have to go back for many many many years to come. I find it ironic how I never get seriously sick ever and the one time that I do it lands me in the hospital. It wasn’t the most pleasant experience, but I’m thankful to be home now. Today I’m going to share with you…
