Winter in Seoul 2018: 6 Places To Visit For A Taste of Seoul’s Winter Charms

Blog SEOUL COVER - Winter in Seoul 2018: 6 Places To Visit For A Taste of Seoul's Winter Charms

When talking about ideal winters, winter in Seoul is probably not the first thing that would pop into my mind. Don’t get me wrong, I like going to Seoul, but winter is not my favorite season to be there. Nonetheless, the thing with countries that have four seasons is that each season is bound to have its own unique charm. And because I am the type of traveler that tries to find something to like in each place I go, I can definitely pick out certain things I enjoyed whilst spending a soul-freezing winter in Seoul.

Someone once asked me why I enjoy going to South Korea so much. It got me wondering about it too. It’s true there are other countries that are nicer than South Korea, but there’s something about this country that draws me in. I can’t seem to explain it. On a base level, I would say that I love their food and enjoy learning their language. I also find that they have a rather fascinating culture. It’s the sort that holds on to their historic roots, but at the same time it is the complete opposite of how they were historically. (Did that make sense?)

Like I said, it’s hard to put into words. It’s more of a feeling.

5-Day Sample Sapporo Itinerary for a September Summer Trip

Sapporo Itinerary - 5-Day Sample Sapporo Itinerary for a September Summer Trip

To say my planned Sapporo Itinerary for this trip fell into pieces may seem a bit melodramatic, but that was how it felt to me at the time. None of us could have predicted that we would experience a (hopefully once in a lifetime) major earthquake on our very first night in Sapporo. It caused pretty much the entire island to shut down for approximately 24 hours, more or less.

We spent nearly two days in limbo, and once the electricity and modes of public transport were restored, things were understandably not yet completely normal. Lots of special events got cancelled and most of the tourist spots were still closed and were being examined for any possible damages. Erring on the side of safety is always a good idea, but it was still quite a sad thing to have our carefully constructed trip thrown out the window.

To tell you the truth, I wasn’t supposed to write this Sapporo Itinerary anymore. But taking into account the limited but still fun things we managed to enjoy at the tail end of our trip, I find myself able to make enough recommendations to fill five leisurely days in Sapporo, including visits to nearby places.

The Chuo Bus Company may seem familiar to those who have traveled to Sapporo before. It’s one of the major companies that run public buses around Sapporo and nearby Otaru. Aside from that, they also have something called the their Regular Sightseeing Bus. As the name suggests, these buses take tourists around the popular spots in Hokkaido for a fairly affordable price.

If you’re staying in Sapporo but thinking of going on day trips to nearby cities, the Chuo Regular Sightseeing Bus pretty much takes out all the work for you. All you need is to pick the package that brings you to the places you want to visit from their website, and then you can just kick back and relax. Maybe even take a nap inside the comfy bus of theirs, like me. The next thing you know, you’ve arrived at your destination.

More food to try in Sapporo, Summer 2018 Edition

FOOD DISCOVERIES COVER - More food to try in Sapporo, Summer 2018 Edition

They say one of the best ways to explore Japan is through its colorful cuisine, and for me, Sapporo is one of the best places to do so. Although the food scene in Japan is rich everywhere you go, I feel that this statement is particularly true when applied to Hokkaido. Thanks to its geographical location, Hokkaido has an abundance of amazing seafood, produce, and dairy products. Oh, and ramen as well!

The reason I am singling out Sapporo specifically is because as the capital of Hokkaido, it stands as the most convenient introduction to Hokkaido’s specialties. If you’ll remember, last time I made a list of food to try in Sapporo on your first visit. While that list remains relevant, I am happy to add more recommended dishes and restaurants here. There are 7 locations in this post, and I will rate each of them out of 5 based on my overall experience, just to give you a pretty good idea which places I recommend the most.
